The national currency of Tajikistan is Somoni, 1 somoni equals to 100 dirams (international denomination is TJS). Bank notes in circulation: 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 TJS as well as 10, 20 and 50 dirams. Coins: 1, 3 and 5 somoni, also 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 dirams. You can exchange foreign currency straight after arriving at the airport or in your hotel. Bank exchange offices function in all bank branches in the centre of the city and in the regions of the country. Use of credit cards and travelers cheques is possible in all international hotels and big trading centres in Dushanbe. ATMs are in all big trading centers, supermarkets and banks of big administrative centres and in some regional centres.
According to the Tajik law it is necessary to use the national currency Somoni for any transaction when buying goods and services or any other financial dealings. In Tajikistan it is not expected to leave tips but if you would like to reward good service then small change is appropriate. In shops, supermarkets, big trading centers prices on goods are fixed, however in the market and bazzars it is common to bargain.
